"I love the little ones. You can be more 'you' when you're with them," says Christine Herne, a preschool teacher at the John Williams School No. 5 in Rochester, N.Y. Christine has been teaching for 16 years with 15 of those years at the John Williams School. The young children enter the classroom greeting Ms. Herne before they begin practicing waiting their names. They then play with items in the room as the rest of the children are dropped off. The children have a lot of free choice of what they do during their day and Christine is by their side to join in their activities. Her only time spent at her desk is during their lunch and nap time.  She encourages the students to form friendships within the class and will refer to them as "my friends".
